A Flame Kept For His Homecoming

A Flame Kept for His Homecoming

Reflection on Luke 12:35–38

An oil lamp needs attention. Someone must provide the oil, tend the wick, and protect its flame. Left unattended, its light gradually fades.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks His disciples to keep their lamps burning and remain ready to open the door to their master. Through this simple image, He invites us to examine our hearts: Are we nurturing our relationship with Him, or allowing it to fade through neglect?

The servants in the Gospel cannot determine the hour of their master’s arrival. What they can do is remain faithful to the responsibility entrusted to them. Their readiness expresses their commitment to the one they await.

Our Christian life calls for this same faithfulness.

We do not know how many years lie ahead of us. We cannot control every circumstance or predict every difficulty. Yet today, we can choose to pray, forgive, serve, and turn away from sin. Readiness grows through these daily responses to God’s grace.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2730, teaches that the vigilance Jesus asks of us concerns both His final coming and His coming to us each day. It identifies faith as the light that must remain burning. Our preparation for eternity therefore begins within the ordinary responsibilities of today.

Perhaps we imagine that we will become more prayerful after work becomes easier. We will seek reconciliation after our anger settles. We will return to Confession after we have somehow corrected ourselves.

But postponement can become a habit. There is always another task, another distraction, another reason to delay.

Jesus invites us to respond now. We can bring Him our unfinished struggles and ask for the grace to take the next faithful step.

Consider a familiar experience: someone we love is coming home after a long absence. We prepare a meal, arrange the room, and listen for their arrival. Even as the evening grows late, our expectation gives meaning to the waiting.

This helps us understand Christian vigilance. We await a Person whom we love. Our prayer, repentance, and service prepare our hearts to welcome Him.

The Catechism explains in CCC 1041 that the message of the Last Judgment calls us to conversion while God gives us time, commits us to the justice of His Kingdom, and announces the hope of Christ’s return. Remembering that we will meet the Lord should move us to use the present faithfully.

This gives even small choices eternal significance.

At home, readiness may mean listening patiently to someone whose concerns we have dismissed. At work, it may mean remaining honest despite an opportunity to gain through deceit. In our community, it may mean serving quietly after the excitement has passed and nobody notices our effort.

The Gospel mentions servants who remain watchful deep into the night. There are seasons in our spiritual lives that feel like those late hours. Prayer seems dry. Responsibilities become tiring. We wonder whether our small acts of faithfulness matter.

CCC 2731 recognizes dryness as a real difficulty in prayer and describes the faith that continues to cling to Jesus without the comfort of spiritual feelings. We can remain close to Him even through weariness and silence.

Then Jesus reveals the most astonishing part of the parable: the returning master seats his faithful servants at table and serves them.

What an extraordinary picture of His generosity! The Lord whom we serve desires to welcome us into His joy. Our waiting leads toward communion with Him.

Today, let us identify one place where our lamp needs tending. Is there a prayer we keep postponing, a sin we need to confess, or a person we need to forgive?

With God’s grace, let us begin there. One sincere response today can express our desire to welcome Jesus with an open heart.

Key Takeaway: Keep the flame of faith burning through daily prayer, repentance, and loving service. Readiness for Christ grows through faithfulness today.

Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, keep the light of faith alive within me. Forgive my delays, strengthen me in weariness, and help me respond generously to Your grace. May You find my heart ready to welcome You, today and at the hour of my death. Amen.
